At Baby Ear Piercing, this question comes up every year—right on cue as swim season approaches. And with summer arriving fast, parents aren’t just thinking about swim lessons and pool days… they’re asking:
How long should I wait before swimming with new ear piercings?
While some are starting summer fitness goals, others are planning beach trips, pool parties, and family vacations—often shortly after a new ear piercing.
Let’s break it down clearly and safely.
Ear Piercing Healing Timelines
Understanding healing is key before introducing any body of water.
Earlobe piercings:6–9 weeks for initial healing12 months or longer for complete healing
Cartilage piercings:6–9 months for initial healing12 months or longer for complete healing
During the initial healing phase, piercings should be free from:
Dead skin cell buildup
Crusting or discharge
Redness, swelling, or irritation
These are signs the piercing is not yet ready for water exposure.
Swimming With a New Ear Piercing
At Baby Ear Piercing, we align closely with cosmetic plastic surgeon aftercare standards.
Our professional recommendation:
✔ Wait until initial healing is complete before swimming in:
Pools
Lakes
Rivers & streams
Oceans
Hot tubs
This applies unless the piercing is fully protected.
While we absolutely adore sea salt for ear piercing healing, it must be:
Clean
Dry
Processed
Free from environmental contaminants
Natural bodies of water—even saltwater—can contain microorganisms and pollutants that increase the risk of irritation or infection during early healing.
If You Must Swim During the Initial Healing Period
We understand—sometimes swimming can’t be avoided.
If you must swim with a new ear piercing:
✔ Protect it completely
Many guests successfully use a Tegaderm™ waterproof patch.
Important notes:
Tegaderm patches are waterproof, not water-proof guaranteed
No product can promise 100% dryness
Guests have reported good results using Tegaderm as early as 48 hours post-piercing
How to Use a Waterproof Patch Safely
Before applying a waterproof patch:
Coat the piercing with a non-allergenic, non-water-soluble barrier such as:
Organic coconut oil
Bacitracin
Neosporin (non-water-soluble base)
Optionally place a small piece of clean cotton or protective material over the piercing to prevent the patch from sticking directly to the jewelry.
Apply the waterproof patch carefully, ensuring a full seal.
Use a brand-new patch for each swim session.
Barrier creams alone may offer minimal or no protection, depending on water exposure and movement.
an Ear Piercing dry with use even just 48 hours of a new Ear Piercing.
Final Thoughts From Ear Piercing Professionals at the Baby Ear Piercing Studio in San Jose, CA
Swimming too soon is one of the most common causes of:
Irritation bumps
Delayed healing
Infections
Jewelry compatibility issues
When in doubt, waiting is always safer than rushing.
